We also experimented with engineers f rom Milan Ingegneria and theMapei laboratories – who have extraordinary expertise in this sector – to see how the mix design could be used to improve mechanical resistance of the pisé, which in the end was ten times higher than its nominal values, reaching those of a good concrete. In addition to mechanical strength, the weather resistance level was also increased, an important element for maintaining and preserving the building over time in the climatic conditions of Entebbe. Il ricorso a uno dei sistemi costruttivi più ricorrenti in Africa, la terra, è stato discusso sin dall’inizio negli incontri con Gino Strada. La terra cruda è abitualmente connessa a un sistema vernacolare di tecniche ed espressioni formali che non potevano essere applicate in una macchina che si voleva efficiente e durevole: non a caso sono stati realizzati due mock-up per studiare e testare con attenzione le modalità realizzative, i particolari costruttivi e l’effetto finale. Abbiamo anche sperimentato con gli ingegneri di Milan Ingegneria e i laboratori Mapei – che hanno competenze straordinarie in questo settore – le possibilità di migliorare con il mix design la resistenza meccanica del pisé , che alla fine è risultata dieci volte superiore ai valori di letteratura, raggiungendo quelli di un buon calcestruzzo. Oltre alla resistenza meccanica, è stato aumentato il grado di resistenza agli agenti atmosferici, che nelle condizioni climatiche di Entebbe giocherà un ruolo importante per la manutenzione e la conservazione dell’edificio nel tempo.
