87 We have focused our design efforts on the shared areas, spaces for families, for playing and learning. A pediatric hospital always involves the presence of relatives, as we have also learned in our work for the hospital in Thessaloniki: there must be facilities to accommodate families, and therefore on the ground floor we must provide accommodation for the various groups of relatives and temporary spaces for different uses. In Africa, the nature of society itself is characterized by the existence of large families (an average of six people) who travel with sick children and care for them throughout their stay. A hospital of this kind is not just a machine for healing, but a shared home for the sick, their relatives, doctors and all the technical staff. Abbiamo concentrato le nostre attenzioni progettuali nel disegno delle aree comuni, spazi per le famiglie, per il gioco e per l’apprendimento. Un ospedale pediatrico comporta sempre una presenza di famigliari, come abbiamo imparato anche nel lavoro per l’ospedale di Salonicco: ci devono essere strutture che ospitino le famiglie, e quindi al piano terra bisogna predisporre alloggi per i vari nuclei dei parenti e spazi temporanei per i diversi usi. In Africa, la natura stessa della società prevede l’esistenza di nuclei famigliari numerosi (in media sei persone) che si spostano con i bambini malati e li assistono per tutto il periodo della loro permanenza. Un ospedale come questo non è solo una macchina per guarire, ma una casa comune dei malati, dei loro parenti, dei medici e di tutto il personale tecnico.
