I like to think of Africa as a laboratory for the future and not just as a stage for a theatre of suffering and poverty. Therefore, if you decide to go to Africa, you must go with the intention of doing things in the best way possible: from a medical standpoint, of course, but also in architectural terms. The excellence of the building goes hand in hand with the idea of going to Africa to teach local doctors, nurses and all the staff the best practices of the most advanced western hospitals. Se non sembrasse paradossale, viste le distanze storiche e geografiche, mi sentirei di dire che questa piccola struttura della salute appartieneaunaanticaeconsolidatatradizione occidentale che ha trovato espressione ad esempio in quella che a Milano fu chiamata non a caso la “Cà Granda” e a Napoli “Albergo dei poveri”. Mipiacepensareall’Africacomeaunlaboratorio per il futuro e non solo come la scena di un teatro delle sofferenze e della povertà. Per cui, se decidi di andare in Africa devi andarci con l’intenzione di fare le cose al meglio: sul piano medico, ovviamente, ma altrettanto sul piano dell’architettura. L’eccellenza del costruire si sposa con l’idea solidale di andare in Africa a insegnare ai medici locali, agli infermieri e a tutto il personale degli addetti le best pratctice degli ospedali occidentali più all’avanguardia.
