63 At that point, EMERGENCY decided to enlist the help of Renzo Piano, who we approached as we do all architecture firms that work with us: with a clear understanding of how to design and manage a hospital, but always eager to improve. Although we had never worked together, there was an immediate atmosphere of understanding, based on a deep recognition of the value of each other’s work, and we can say we learned a lot. The challenge was enormous: no one had ever built load-bearing walls of this size in the ground, and what’s more in Africa! To guarantee the highest quality of the work, Renzo Piano involved a design team of the highest level, including TAMassociati, who have designed many hospitals with us, Milan Ingegneria and Prisma Engineering, which became part of a driving force that pushed the project forward with exemplary enthusiasm. The approach the designers encouraged us to adopt was that of “going slow to go fast”: the construction of the earth walls required a very accurate study, ranging from the excavation soil to the type of additive, to the method of working the mixture, to the special equipment and formwork to be used, but dedicating time to the creation of scale models of part of the building allowed us to save time during construction. A quel punto, EMERGENCY ha deciso di avvalersi dell’aiuto di Renzo Piano, al quale ci siamo approcciati come facciamo con tutti gli studi di architettura che lavorano con noi: avendo ben chiaro il modo in cui si progetta e gestisce un ospedale, ma sempre desiderosi di migliorarci. Nonostante non avessimo mai collaborato prima di allora, c’è stato da subito un clima d’intesa, basato suunprofondo riconoscimento del valore del lavoro dell’altro, e possiamo dire di aver imparato molto. La sfida era enorme: nessuno aveva mai realizzato dei muri portanti in terra di queste dimensioni, e per di più in Africa! Per garantire la massima qualità dell’opera, Renzo Piano ha coinvolto un team di progettazione di altissimo livello, tra cui TAMassociati, che con noi ha disegnato tanti ospedali, Milan Ingegneria e Prisma Engineering, diventati parte di un motore che ha spinto il progetto con un entusiasmo esemplare. L’approccio verso cui ci hanno spinto i progettisti è stato quello di “andare piano per andare veloce”: la realizzazione dei muri in terra ha richiesto uno studio molto accurato, che andava dal terreno di scavo al tipo di additivo, alla metodologia di lavorazione dell’impasto, fino agli equipaggiamenti e casseri speciali da utilizzare, ma dedicare tempo alla creazione di modelli in scala di parte dell’edificio ci ha permesso di risparmiarne durante la costruzione.
