59 These offices are populated by people who have been working on EMERGENCY’s various projects for years, a choice that has borne recognized results in the management of the hospitals. All construction choices for a new hospital are made together with the people who have experienced and will experience the daily life, management and control of the structure: the medical directors of the various departments (operating theatres, intensive care, inpatient wards, etc.), who discuss the flow of patients, staff and materials within the hospital with the architects; the pharmacy managers, who check the space available for the storage of medicines, and so on. Plant designs are reviewed so that maintenance can be guaranteed with the resources available on site, and their sizing – in compliance with regulations – is determined on the basis of real needs, developed and assessed via the management of other hospitals. Experts from very different disciplines approach the design of a building with different languages, points of view and assumptions, so bringing doctors, architects and engineers together within a shared project is an exercise that requires great mutual respect. This can be obtained only after a lengthy participatory planning exercise, years of comparisons and shared experiences, in which the effects of the choices made together are tested in practice. Tutte le scelte per la costruzione di un nuovo ospedale vengono fatte assieme alle persone che hanno vissuto e vivranno la quotidianità, la gestione e il controllo della struttura. Perciò sono i responsabili medici dei vari dipartimenti (sale operatorie, terapia intensiva, degenze, ecc.) a discutere con gli architetti i flussi di pazienti, staff e materiali all’interno dell’ospedale; chi deve gestire la farmacia verifica gli spazi a disposizione per lo stoccaggio dei farmaci, e così via. I progetti degli impianti vengono revisionati per far sì che possa essere garantita la manutenzione con le risorse disponibili in loco , e il loro dimensionamento – nel rispetto delle normative – viene fatto sulla base delle reali esigenze, messe a punto e verificate nella gestione degli altri ospedali. I linguaggi, i punti di vista, gli assunti con cui gli esperti di discipline molto diverse si approcciano alla progettazione di un edificio sono differenti tra loro, perciò far dialogare medici, architetti, ingegneri su un progetto comune è un esercizio che presuppone un grande rispetto reciproco. Rispetto che si ottiene solo dopo un lungo esercizio di progettazione partecipata, anni di confronti ed esperienze condivise, in cui nella pratica si verificano gli effetti delle scelte fatte assieme.
